Thankfully, cameras have come a long way from their digital beginning, and today's cameras are resistant against most things. Still, placing a regular digital camera into a tub of water is not a good idea. If you want a camera that is truly water resistant, consider looking at the following types.
The Olympus Stylus 1050, Pentax Optio W20, SeaLife Reefmaster ECO Shot, and Vivitar Vivicam are all great water resistant digital camera options. All of these digital cameras can be placed inside of a body of water without any damage at all. In fact, many of them are made for diving and snorkeling, which makes them great travel cameras.

If you are on a budget, the best thing to do is look for a camera that will suit your needs. If you don't care about all the extra gadgets, consider buying a basic camera that will take good snapshots. You don't have to have the super underwater lens in order to enjoy using your camera.
It's a good idea to have a water resistant digital camera if you travel a lot. But, even if you don't travel, having a camera that can resist spills is not a bad idea. After all, you never know when your camera might become damaged due to spilled water.
